– Since 2000, more than 30 million people have visited Tate Modern – it was designed for 1.8 million visitors annually, but has reached an average of 4.6 million visitors over recent years. Although it's an immense and impressive building - a former power plant - understandably there is huge pressure on public facilities; and more space is needed to maintain and develop its programme. It is intended that the form of the new building next to the old one will be completed in time for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.
