– A gentle little timewarp. Jump off the merry-go-round and stop. This 400-year-old vicarage has been restored into a four-bedroom slice of simplicity.

The church bells dong, cyclists whizz by. The rooms up the teeny tiny spiral staircase in the eaves are full of Frette linens, Ralph Lauren furniture and original beams. Breakfasts – made by the brilliant owner Pamela van der Schaar – are delicious: fresh fruits, warm breads, homemade jam and local cheeses are eaten out in the pretty waterfront garden as ducks doze on the bank.

If you can be bothered, paddle about on canoes, hire a bike, take the hotel’s boat along the canals into nearby Amsterdam or ask Pamela to introduce you to the village Picasso, extraordinary painter Erik Renssen.(source Tatler: Ranked among the best 'Pocket wonderlands' hotels)
