– All is well with the world at the Ritz: it’s the ultimate comfort zone, floating as happy as an oyster in its own golden-syrup light, with cream teas and cucumber sandwiches in its blood.

A legendary grande dame with a magnetic beauty, the Ritz is cosy refinement with a fizz in the air. The harps, the dining room, the Rivoli Bar – the proper old-fashioned atmosphere is shot through with an unparalleled sense of history and glamour.

The ghosts of Nancy Mitford and Evelyn Waugh order champagne. Children – however bratty (but do tell them to behave) – are treated like real people. There is a wonderful sense of occasion (the Christmas decorations are like an Edwardian fantasy): dress up, sod the recession, cosset yourself in one the best spots in the world to run away to.
